History of the Long Term Recovery Committee (LTRC)
The Lee County Department of Human Services was called upon to meet the unmet needs of the increasing number of survivors we were seeing in our lobby. After the devastating effects of Hurricane Charley, August 2004, and Hurricane Wilma, October 2005, the citizens of Lee County were struggling to pick up the pieces and move on with their lives. The Lee County Department of Human Services, in partnership with United Way of Lee County; The Salvation Army; American Red Cross; Senior Friendship; Christian Reformed World Relief Committee; United Methodist Committee On Relief; Goodwill Industries; The Workforce Development Board, and Lee County Emergency Operations formed the Long-Term Recovery Committee (LTRC). The LTRC was designed to prepare a Disaster Recovery Plan to provide for the long-term unmet needs of those affected by a declared disaster. Through the efforts of all agency's involved, under the direction of the LTRC, case managers were brought in to work with the disaster survivor's and establish a plan of recovery. The Emergency Management Plan had not realized the long-term problems of a disaster on the people affected, and we needed structure and organization. Together, we developed the
Long-Term Disaster Recovery Guidelines. Since the Committee formed, other agencies joined the effort. With the addition of new partners an Executive Committee, Chaired by the Department of Human Services, was created.
